Black Friday 2026 in Australia: Dates, Real Deals and How to Spot a Fake Discount

Gaming desk at night with an ultrawide monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset and gift boxes

Black Friday has become one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in Australia. Finder estimates Australians spend around $4.5 billion over the event, with the average shopper spending about $531 on Black Friday alone. For tech, it’s often the best time of year to pick up a new monitor, upgrade a PC or sort out patchy Wi-Fi.

But not every “deal” is a deal. Some prices are barely lower than usual, and some sale claims don’t stack up. In this post we cover the key dates for 2026, what the ACCC is watching for, how to tell a genuine saving from a fake one, and the tech that’s on sale with us right now.

When Is Black Friday 2026 in Australia?

Black Friday has stretched well beyond one day. Many retailers now run sales for a week or more beforehand, and some carry on through Cyber Monday. If you’re buying gifts, an early start also gives your order plenty of time to arrive before Christmas.

The ACCC Is Watching Black Friday Sales

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has been paying close attention to Black Friday advertising. Ahead of last year’s sales it put retailers on notice and swept Black Friday ads for misleading claims. It said it would be looking for:

  • Fake urgency, such as “3 days only” or countdown timers that don’t match how long the sale actually runs.
  • “Sitewide” or “storewide” sales that leave out lots of products.
  • Fine print that undercuts the headline offer.
  • “Up to X% off” claims where only a handful of products get the biggest discount.
  • Misleading “was/now” or strikethrough prices.

It’s not just talk. In June 2025, Michael Hill, MyHouse and Hairhouse Online each paid a $19,800 penalty over Black Friday “sitewide” sale ads that the ACCC alleged excluded some products.

How to Spot a Genuine Deal

A few simple habits will help you separate real savings from marketing.

Comparing prices across stores on a phone before buying
  1. Check prices now. The ACCC’s own advice is to note the price of anything you’re planning to buy before the sales start. A screenshot or a price-tracking site makes it easy to see whether the “sale” price is actually lower.
  2. Compare the price, not the percentage. “40% off” means nothing if the starting price was inflated. What matters is what you pay compared with what other Australian stores are charging.
  3. Read the fine print. Look for exclusions, member-only pricing and minimum spends before you get excited about a headline discount.
  4. Check the specs, not just the name. Some products have several versions with similar names. Make sure the deal is on the exact model you want, with the right size, storage or connections.
  5. Know the returns and warranty terms. Buying from an Australian retailer means you’re covered by Australian Consumer Law. Check the store’s change-of-mind policy too, as it can differ for sale items.

If an ad looks misleading, the ACCC asks shoppers to report it on its website, with screenshots if possible.

Should You Buy Now or Wait?

If the price is already good and the item is in stock, there’s often no reason to wait. Popular items can sell out over Black Friday weekend, and couriers get much busier the closer you get to Christmas.

Waiting makes more sense if you’re chasing something specific that hasn’t dropped in price yet, or if you’re still working out exactly what you need. Either way, compare prices before you buy and don’t rush into something just because a timer is counting down.

What’s Worth Buying on Black Friday?

Here’s where we think the best value usually sits for tech:

White graphics card, power supply, CPU cooler, SSD and Wi-Fi access point on a workbench
  • Monitors. Gaming and ultrawide monitors are some of the most heavily discounted items each year. Not sure which to choose? Our monitor buying guide explains sizes, refresh rates and panel types.
  • PC parts. Cases, power supplies, coolers and graphics cards often come down in price, which makes Black Friday a good time to build or upgrade.
  • Networking. If your Wi-Fi drops out at the far end of the house, a sale is a good excuse to fix it properly with mesh or an access point.
  • Gaming gear and webcams. Mice, keyboards, headsets and webcams make great gifts and are often well discounted.
